The evening cycle produced no new MATERIAL developments. Yet the most important detail of the day emerged precisely in the evening: footage of a sea drone seconds before it hit Contship Jet, and an analyst's view that it is most likely derived from Russia's Murena-300S. That is a strong technical lead. It is not yet proof of responsibility.

The cycle in numbers

A quiet cycle is not an empty one. The Contship Jet investigation has moved from "launched from anywhere" to a specific silhouette and a specific model. But the gap between a matching hull and proven attribution is one that should not be jumped. BSM records the lead without delivering a verdict.

Contship Jet: from unknown drone to recognisable silhouette

Reuters verified a video, reportedly filmed by a crew member moments before the strike. It shows a matte-black uncrewed surface vessel, about 5–6 metres long, running alongside the ship at high speed before turning sharply into the hull.

Thomas Alexa, a senior analyst at the maritime security firm Ambrey, assessed that the drone is most likely a variant of, or based on, the Russian Murena-300S. Its manoeuvres, he said, suggest remote control rather than autonomous operation. Former Ukrainian naval officer Andriy Ruzhenko told Reuters the drone does not resemble any Ukrainian sea drone he knows.

The Murena-300S was developed by the Center for Unmanned Systems design bureau in Tula and unveiled in 2024. Published specifications give a hull of about 5.7 metres, a range of at least 500 km and a warhead of 25 to 300 kg depending on configuration. The developer has named the Black Sea as a main area of use.

Bulgaria's Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, said the attack "came from the east" and that drone data had been shared with national and allied authorities. He did not name an attacker. Reuters stresses that the perpetrator has not been established.

A similar drone was previously sighted near Romania's Neptun Deep gas project, where a Romanian F-16 opened fire on it. The resemblance is notable, but on its own it does not confirm origin.

Laboratory results from water samples taken at five points on the Bulgarian coast have not yet been published. Initial inspections found no visible pollution.

BSM analysis

The lead is substantial. Hull, size and attack profile match the public description of the Russian model, and specialists do not see a Ukrainian design. But a drone's silhouette is not its operator's signature. Hulls can be copied, and attribution in maritime attacks rests on launch and control data, not appearance.

Note how Bulgarian official language has shifted in a day. First the navy commander said the drones "could have been launched from anywhere". Now the Chief of Defence speaks of a direction, "from the east", and of data passed to allies. Sofia is narrowing the circle without moving to a direct accusation.

🟡 Attribution has not been established. Ambrey's assessment is an expert hypothesis, not proof.

The EU and Nord Stream: position unchanged

The European Commission repeated that the phase-out of Russian gas continues regardless of geopolitics. Energy spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the phase-out law is not tied to sanctions and that Russian gas and LNG will leave the European market whatever happens. Long-term LNG contracts are due to end in January 2027 and pipeline contracts in September 2027.

The statements came amid reports of US–Russian discussions on resuming gas supplies to Europe, including via Nord Stream with a US investor. Ursula von der Leyen has said energy sanctions will stay until the war ends.

BSM analysis

There is no new legal decision, and that is the signal. Brussels is answering US–Russian scenarios not with new steps but by pointing to a law already in force. For the Baltic states, which cut Russian gas earlier than most of the EU, the key point is that repealing the law would require a new Commission proposal and a qualified majority of member states.

WATCH: still under review

Lithuania, Starlink arson. No new extradition steps or proven intelligence command chain recorded. (Detailed analysis: 14:00, 29 October.)

Black Sea surveillance. Deployment of additional NATO surveillance assets remains under discussion.

Patriot / NASAMS. No new US approvals or interceptor deliveries confirmed.

Moscow, mass drone attack. Russian figures of 613 drones aimed at Moscow and 1,214 nationwide remain independently unconfirmed.

Conclusion

The evening's key development is not a new event but a new quality to an old one. The Contship Jet attack now has a face: a black boat on video and a named model in an analyst's assessment. It still has no proven address.

Next checks: official attribution by Bulgaria or NATO, water test results, and decisions on Black Sea surveillance assets.

Resemblance narrows the list of suspects. Evidence closes it.
