Ukraine's 29 October Neptune strike on Marinovka airfield now rests on more than a military statement. Satellite imagery shows aircraft wreckage at two parking positions. Russia has not acknowledged the losses, and the wider effect on the base remains unknown.

What happened

Overnight on 29 October, the Ukrainian Navy said its Long Neptune cruise missiles struck Marinovka airfield in Russia's Volgograd region, destroying two Su-34 fighter-bombers. Militarnyi puts the strike distance at more than 600 km, while ISW places the airfield roughly 283 km from the border. The first figure describes the missile's route, the second the map.

On 30 October, the monitoring project AviVector published post-strike satellite images of the parking area. The OSINT group CyberBoroshno shared lower-resolution imagery from 28 October showing a Su-34 in position before the attack. Militarnyi also reports a damaged hangar near the impact site.

On 31 October, the Institute for the Study of War included the two destroyed Su-34s in its daily assessment, citing imagery published by Ukrainian OSINT channels.

What changed

The previous cycle had only a military claim. The new element is before-and-after imagery that can be examined outside Ukraine's official channels. This is late corroboration of the 29 October event, not a new strike on 1 November.

The limits still matter. ISW does not say it verified the damage independently; it relies on the published imagery. The missile variant, flight path and full damage assessment come only from the Ukrainian side. 🟡

BSM analysis

Marinovka is part of a pattern. On 15 October, the Ukrainian Navy claimed six Su-34M aircraft hit at Borisoglebsk airfield in Voronezh region, again followed by satellite imagery. If both claims hold, Russia lost eight aircraft of this type in two weeks. That number comes from the Ukrainian Navy and deserves caution, but the direction is clear: Long Neptune is being used methodically against the airfields that launch Russia's glide-bomb campaign.

The Su-34 is the main carrier of UMPK-fitted glide bombs that hit Ukrainian frontline towns daily. Losing even two aircraft at one base has practical consequences, from fewer sorties out of that airfield to forced dispersal and new spending on shelters and air defence.

For the Baltic states, the story matters for a different reason. An airbase hundreds of kilometres behind the front is no longer a safe rear area. Moscow's logical response is to disperse aircraft to other airfields, and some of those may sit closer to the north-western direction. There is no evidence of such redeployment yet, but tracking where Su-34s move after this series of strikes is directly relevant to monitoring NATO's flank.

What it means for Ukraine

Imagery from orbit strengthens Kyiv's case on long-range weapons. A domestically built missile has shown it can destroy military aircraft deep inside Russia. That supports partner funding for Neptune production and weakens the argument that Ukraine must wait for permission to use Western missiles.

Still unknown

Russia has not confirmed the losses. 🟡 It is not established how many missiles were launched or intercepted. Nor is it known whether sortie rates from Marinovka changed after 29 October. Further satellite passes and glide-bomb activity on the relevant front sectors will answer that.

WATCH — 34 open lines of investigation

The register now holds 34 lines: 32 retained, plus Kstovo and Marinovka follow-up. None was closed without sufficient evidence.

Kstovo / NORSI refinery (Lukoil). Overnight on 1 November, OSINT channels and residents reported explosions and fire at Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez. After the snapshot cut-off, Nizhny Novgorod governor Gleb Nikitin reported a massive drone attack and "significant damage" to an industrial facility in Kstovo district, with no casualties. The facility was not officially named. More in the BSM Ufa update.

Oleshky localized ceasefire. Each side accuses the other of violations. Southern Defence Forces spokesperson Maksym Kravchuk said Russian troops used the pause to rotate personnel, reinforce positions and move supplies. Russia accuses a Ukrainian drone of hitting a civilian car. ISW cannot verify either claim but judges the humanitarian mission largely successful. The civilian return was covered on 31 October.

Patriot. The proposed sale of 500 PAC-3 MSE interceptors remains an approval, not a transfer. No signed contract, production acceleration or Ukrainian receipt was recorded this cycle.

Black Sea shipping ceasefire. US, Polish, Turkish and other proposals are under discussion. No binding maritime ceasefire or shipping-security mechanism is in place.

Bottom line

Marinovka is the stronger military development of the cycle: two combat aircraft, independent imagery and a clear pattern of strikes on glide-bomb airfields. But imagery records wreckage, not effect. The real cost will show when fewer bombs come from that direction.

The image settles whether it happened. What it changed is still an open question.
