One important clarification up front: according to more detailed reporting, the train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Merz's top adviser Günter Sautter, Bundestag MP Robin Wagener and others was not the train directly hit. It was a separate, privately chartered train traveling the same corridor, which crossed the border checkpoint a few minutes ahead of the train that was struck. Because of drone activity near the border, their train was stopped and underwent a precautionary evacuation — with no direct hit. The actual drone strike on the locomotive of the regular Kyiv-Warsaw train, carrying 206 passengers, is the separate incident BSM already covered.

What happened

On the morning of 13 September, according to Ukrzaliznytsia, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of the Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train roughly 2 km from the Polish border; 206 passengers were aboard, with no injuries reported. The same morning, in the same border corridor, a separate privately chartered train was carrying participants returning from Kyiv after the annual Yalta European Strategy conference — including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

According to Der Spiegel (via Charter97) and eutoday.net, also aboard this train were Günter Sautter, foreign and security policy adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, security advisers from Britain, France and Italy, Bundestag MPs, diplomats and academics. The train stopped near the Polish border at around 5 a.m.; conductors woke passengers and began a precautionary evacuation due to drone activity in the border area. The alert was lifted shortly afterward once no further drones were detected; none of the passengers were harmed.

BSM analysis: Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, traveling in the same corridor, wrote directly that "it was not our train, but the train that arrived just a few minutes after us at the border crossing" — his own train received an evacuation warning but was able to continue on to the Dorohusk crossing. Green Party Bundestag MP Robin Wagener, also aboard, described the attacks as indiscriminate violence against Ukrainian civilians and a dangerous escalation close to EU and NATO territory. President Zelenskyy said Russia deliberately targeted the passenger train and a gas station at the border.

What's still uncertain

🟡 It's not established whether Russia knew Western officials were present in the border corridor at the time of the strike. There is currently no evidence that the drone strike on the regular passenger train was deliberately aimed at the train carrying Johnson and others — sources are explicit these were separate trains.

🟡 Early social-media and some media reporting conflated the two trains into a single story ("the train Johnson was on was attacked"); more detailed verification (eutoday.net, Der Spiegel) clarifies these were two distinct, though closely timed and co-located, incidents.

Why it matters

The presence of a former UK Prime Minister, Germany's chancellor's top adviser, a Bundestag MP and diplomats in close proximity to a strike near the Polish border adds political weight to an already significant incident — regardless of whether the attack was deliberately aimed at them. Bottom line

The most accurate framing right now: Western officials found themselves in a zone of elevated drone threat and underwent precautionary evacuation, but were not directly struck — unlike the nearby regular passenger train. Getting that distinction right matters for accuracy, without diminishing the core point: the air threat along Ukraine's border transport corridors is now directly touching the movement of Western politicians and diplomats too.
