The drones did not hit a refinery or a fuel depot. They hit a commercial data centre. It is fully shut down, some third-party services in Russia went offline, and the company itself says it does not yet know whether the equipment can be restored. This is not a cyberattack but a physical strike on digital infrastructure. The key question is not whether it was hit but what exactly was destroyed.

What happened

Overnight into 8 October, drones struck a Yandex data centre in Sasovo, Ryazan region. According to Meduza, the fire broke out on the grounds of the Sasta machine-tool plant, which houses one of the company's data centres. The independent Telegram channel Astra first reported the fire from eyewitness photos and video. Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences shot down Ukrainian drones over the Ryazan region overnight.

Yandex confirmed that an incident occurred that affected part of the infrastructure, that the situation is under control, that no one was injured, that the data centre is completely shut down and that the team is restoring services. Several Russian websites went offline, including the auto-posting platform Postmypost and the Ryazan edition of Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Reuters, as relayed by the digest, described it as the first confirmed major drone attack on a Russian data centre since the full-scale invasion began. Services beyond Yandex were affected too: the Russian Railways website and the Cian property platform. Yandex's core consumer services stayed up.

At 16:22 UTC on 8 October Yandex, per the same source, acknowledged that its damage assessment was incomplete and that it was unclear whether the equipment could be restored. Two of the company's three previously identified AI-development supercomputers are located at Sasovo. Their condition is unknown.

Zelenskyy later said Ukraine was responding in kind to Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centres, but he did not directly acknowledge responsibility for Sasovo.

BSM analysis: The delta is in the category of target. Until now long-range strikes concentrated on refineries, fuel depots, ports, military and defence-industrial sites. Sasovo shows that large commercial computing sites are physically vulnerable too. What matters is that this is not a cyberattack: the network is up, the hardware is under fire. Ukrainian data centres have also been hit before (see BSM, 27 September), so this looks like a mirror response, but there is no direct confirmation of intent.

Confirmed versus outstanding

Claim Status
Drone strike, fire, Sasovo data centre fully shut down ✅ Yandex, Meduza; Reuters (per the digest)
Outages at third-party services (Russian Railways, Cian and others) ✅ Reuters (per the digest); Meduza names other sites
The drones were Ukrainian 🟡 Meduza and Ukrainian monitoring channels say so; Yandex's quoted wording is "an incident," not "Ukrainian drones"
Official acknowledgement by Kyiv 🟡 Zelenskyy speaks of responding in kind but does not name Sasovo
Yandex does not know whether the equipment can be restored 🟡 Reuters per the digest; I could not verify directly (source blocked)
Condition of the two supercomputers at Sasovo 🟡 Unknown
Permanent loss of Russian computing capacity 🟡 Premature; no evidence
Military consequences 🟡 Not established

What it means for the Baltic states and Ukraine

For Ukraine this is a possible extension of the long-range campaign to Russia's computing and cloud infrastructure. The consequences depend on what was actually damaged: if the equipment survived and workloads can be moved, the cost is mainly financial and operational. If a large part of the servers was destroyed, replacement is hard for Russia because of restrictions on importing advanced processors, but there is no evidence of permanent loss yet.

For the Baltic states the relevance is indirect but real. European critical-infrastructure planning increasingly has to account for physical attacks on cloud and computing sites alongside cyber threats. Geographic redundancy, independent power and tested recovery procedures matter for civilian services and for military-support systems. This establishes neither an immediate new threat to Baltic data centres nor a change in NATO's posture.

WATCH

🟡 RAF Molesworth. The two Latvian nationals arrested on 8 October remain under British counterterrorism investigation. No publicly established evidence links them to Russian intelligence, espionage or sabotage. Next check: charges, attribution, evidence of intelligence collection. (Detail in BSM, 8 October, 20:00.)

🟡 Black Sea. Attribution of the attacks on commercial ships in Romania's and Bulgaria's economic zones is still unresolved. Bulgaria has suspended the search for 12 missing crew of Alfa Watan. The drone operator is not identified.

🟡 Lithuania, permanent US base. No confirmed agreement or Washington decision.

🟡 Lithuania, constitutional amendment. The 6 October vote is the latest verified step; the procedure is incomplete and no nuclear deployment is authorised.

🟡 NATO, Theory of Victory. No new formal adoption; next checkpoint 12 October.

🟡 Germany, the Hanning case. On 6 October former BND chief August Hanning (80) and his former aide Manfred D. were arrested. They are suspected of treason and passing state secrets; prosecutors allege Hanning used classified information to prepare an analysis for an employee of a foreign intelligence service, and that the aide supplied around 2,000 documents for payment until June 2022. The recipient country or countries are not named, and it is not publicly established that this was a Russian operation. The arrests stem from a separate investigation into the 2024 abduction of Christina Block's children in Denmark. Per the digest (Reuters), European intelligence services are assessing whether information shared with Germany was compromised; I did not verify that report separately.

Other items checked

The Dutch Nexus counter-drone command system: Reuters described it on 8 October, but the €30 million contract was announced in July 2026 and battlefield use goes back to 2025, so it is not a new event and does not merit a separate update. The UK–Germany treaty entering into force was covered on 8 October at 20:00, and the Lithuanian border deployment and Switchblade 600 at 14:00. Preparations for the annual Steadfast Noon exercise do not change NATO's nuclear posture.

Conclusion

Sasovo poses a concrete question: can the long-range campaign turn data centres into another category of strategic target, and can Russia quickly recover what it lost? There is no answer yet, only the fact that a physical strike on digital infrastructure is now real.

Next checks: the real damage to Yandex equipment, including the supercomputers; restoration timeline and whether cloud services remain unavailable; further strikes on data centres; whether Kyiv formally claims responsibility; charges in the Molesworth case; prosecutors' findings in the Hanning case.
